The general rule here is that you should always be leaving to move toward a better opportunity. You should never position it as fleeing from a bad opportunity. You should never lie in a job interview. However, you should highlight the positive reasons for considering a new position and avoid talking about any negative ones if you can.

Why do you want to leave your current company?

  • In my current role, I’ve learned many new skills. I’m looking for a position in which I can continue to grow that skill set in new circumstances.
  •  I am interested in learning more about (something this job includes), and this job provides an opportunity to leverage my current areas of expertise and increase my skills.
  • This job has been a great experience, but growth is limited because the company is relatively small. So, to continue to grow, I need to look elsewhere, and working in this opportunity looks very interesting to me.
  • I have been at my company for three years now and have learned a lot from working with some amazing sales people.  I worked my way up to regional sales manager and achieved my targets. However, I am starting to feel like I need some new challenges. This position really appeals to me because it would allow me to manage a bigger team and sell more innovative products.
